This patient has a Romberg sign manifested by unsteadiness when standing with feet together and eyes closed.

About Romberg sign
To test for the presence of Romberg sign, have the patient stand with his eyes open and feet together. If he is stable, ask the patient to close his eyes. The Romberg sign is present if the patient has a tendency to fall with his eyes closed.
Localization
The Romberg sign occurs due to a severe loss of position sense, or proprioception, usually due to posterior column dysfunction in the spinal cord or severe peripheral neuropathy.
