This patient has an ataxic gait manifested by a wide base and unsteadiness. Note that he tries to steady himself by touching the wall. Ataxic gait is usually due to dysfunction of the cerebellum, especially the midline cerebellum, or vermis. This can occur due to structural lesions, such as stroke or tumors, degenerative disorders or toxic derangements, such as alcohol intoxication.
