This patient has a swollen optic disc with blurring of the optic disc margins and engorgement of retinal vessels at the optic nerve head. Since the optic nerve is an extension of the central nervous system, ensheathed by meninges, increased intracranial pressure is directly transmitted along the optic nerve, resulting in a swollen disc. Increased intracranial pressure also commonly results in headache and nausea.
