This patient has a Romberg sign manifested by a tendency to fall when standing with the feet together and eyes closed. A lesion in the posterior columns of the spinal cord may cause severe loss of position sense (proprioception) with a resultant Romberg sign. Severe peripheral neuropathy may also cause proprioceptive loss and a Romberg sign.
