Our Patient's Blood work

The next laboratory result to evaluate is our patient's blood work. It was unremarkable, except for his lipid, or lipoprotein, profile. A complete lipoprotein profile should be obtained with the patient fasting. It is an important determination to assess risk in patients with or without known coronary artery disease. Treatment of patients with abnormal lipid profiles will prolong survival and prevent future cardiovascular events.

A lipoprotein or lipid profile includes total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein or LDL cholesterol, and high density lipoprotein or HDL cholesterol. The lipid profile also includes the triglyceride level.
