You have now completed the history and physical examination of a forty-three year old woman with findings consistent with acute, severe mitral regurgitation due to chordal rupture. Further evaluation includes selected laboratory studies.

A complete blood count (CBC) showed a hemoglobin of 11.0, with a white cell count (WBC) of 16,000. Electrolyte study, BUN and creatinine were normal. Urinalysis showed mild proteinuria and microscopic hematuria. Three separate blood cultures were obtained because of suspected endocarditis.
