Patients with recurrent pericarditis typically present with repetitive episodes of chest pain that have a pleuritic component and lessen with sitting up. Any associated pericardial effusion is typically minimal, but may become large enough to cause tamponade. Pleural inflammation may present with similar clinical symptoms.
