Our patient's PLAX
This is a still-frame of a 2-dimensional parasternal long axis view that clearly shows a leaflet of the aortic valve, but its morphology is not well defined. The aortic root and the left ventricle are dilated and the left atrium and mitral valve are unremarkable.

In the real-time study that follows, note the movement of the septum and posterior wall reflecting normal left ventricular systolic function.

Color Doppler
This is a still-frame of a color flow Doppler image from the parasternal long axis view during diastole. A broad-based mosaic color flow jet of significant regurgitation arises from the aortic valve and is seen in the left ventricle. The width of the jet at its origin and its extent are related to the severity of the regurgitation.

In the real-time study that follows, these features are clearly demonstrated.

Systolic doming
This is a systolic still-frame of the parasternal long axis view from another patient. The morphology of the bicuspid aortic valve is well illustrated. The arrows denotes systolic doming of the leaflets, a classic finding in a patient with a pliable aortic bicuspid valve.

In the real-time study that follows, the doming is well seen.

Short axis view
This is a systolic still-frame from the short axis view also from another patient showing a classic bicuspid valve. The arrows denote the two leaflets. In the real-time study that follows, the eccentric nature of the orifice is very well seen.
