Patients with acute myocardial infarction typically present with a history of severe chest discomfort or pressure lasting greater than thirty minutes that may radiate to the arms, neck or jaw and is unrelated to either breathing or position. Symptoms often occur at rest, although they can be precipitated by emotion or exertion. The discomfort may awaken the patient. The patient usually has risk factors for coronary artery disease.
