Acute Pericarditis

Acute pericarditis is suggested by the sharp chest pain that has lasted for hours, is worsened by deep inspiration and lying down and is improved by sitting up and leaning forward. The pain is present in an otherwise healthy young man. A history of a preceding viral upper respiratory infection is common, but it is not pathognomonic of the condition. Similarly, its absence does not exclude the diagnosis.
